Physics Thought Problems

On this page, I will be posting various problems, usually multiple choice, to force you to think about the world we live in and how it works. You must give an answer and clarify your reasoning for it. You will also have to comment on other post as well.

Problem #2

I went for a walk one day. I walked north 6.0 km at 6.0 km/h and then west 10 km at 5.0 km/hr.  Determine …

  1. the total distance of the entire trip,
  2. the total displacement of the entire trip,
  3. the average speed of the entire trip,
  4. the average velocity of the entire trip, and
  5. the average acceleration of the entire trip.

Problem #1

As we know, all objects will only roll down a hill. Or do they? Watch the demo done in class, and try to explain your observations. You must comment on others work as well, but please be sure to be respectful of everyone’s comments.

  1. The double cone ball only looks like it is rolling uphill it is actually just an illusion. The ball starts rolling on the centre of itself but once it gets to the top of the triangle it is on the tips of the cones. By doing this the centre of mass on the ball is actually lowering so the ball itself is actually rolling down hill. It does this because the centre of mass lowers the more it rolls towards the top and gets to the tips of the cones. So the ball is actually rolling downhill.
